Michell Withacre, a Midwife from Atascadero, California who has her own homebirthing business, decided to visit us in the northern part of Peten in a village of Machaquila. Her goal is to provide local midwifes with tools and tips to deliver babies and reduce the infant mortality rate in Guatemala.
During her visit, she taught health education classes at the local health department, and also trained our local doctors and health care workers, police, and firefighters in neonatal CPR, which was an excellent use of her time.
Together with Mitchel, we would like to develop a Maternity Waiting Home so that women can stay with with us during the last month of pregnancy until their babies are born at the local hospital. Working with the local health department and the local government hospital will help the local population to improve women's health in our villages in Peten
